Why Action Beats Hesitation
Two outcomes. Both useful.
We’ve all been there.
Standing at the edge of a decision. Thinking about making a call, starting something new, changing direction, or putting ourselves out there.
And then hesitation creeps in.
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“What if I’m not ready?”
“What if I get it wrong?”
But here’s a philosophy that has guided me for most of my life:
Action beats hesitation. Every time.
Because when you take action, only two things can happen.
1️⃣ It moves you forward and you’re living in alignment with what matters to you.
2️⃣ It ends in “not there yet.” So you try again, or try something else.
Both outcomes move you forward.
Hesitation does not.
A Lesson I Learned Early
I started testing this philosophy quite early in life — long before real estate, business, or coaching.
At school in Germany, we once went on a day trip to Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland), a beautiful tourist area in northern Bavaria. Our class teacher, Ms Elsa Schmitt, an old-school educator who generally held me in high regard, was supervising the excursion.
After exploring stalagmite caves, we stopped at a farmhouse restaurant for lunch.
The young owner served us. He looked remarkably like George Clooney — tall, charming, and clearly the most interesting thing that had happened all day.
Always up for a challenge, I made a bet with my friend Claudia that I would kiss him before lunch was over.
Challenge accepted.
A few minutes later, I did exactly that.
What followed was the loudest screech you could imagine from Ms Schmitt. She marched me outside, face bright red with fury, and delivered a very stern lecture about appropriate behaviour for young ladies on school excursions.
My punishment?
I had to sit on the bus and wait for everyone to finish lunch.
Now, I did feel a little guilty disappointing Ms Schmitt.
But if I’m completely honest…
It was also completely worth it.
The Real Point
Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea — I’m not suggesting that kissing strangers should become your life’s mission.
But that moment stayed with me because it illustrated something important:
Action creates stories, learning and momentum.
Hesitation creates nothing.
When you take action, one of two things happens:
• You discover what works.
• You discover what doesn’t.
Either way, you adjust, learn and grow more confident.
Sometimes the result is simply: “Not there yet.”
And that’s perfectly fine.
“Not there yet” just means:
• Try again.
• Try differently.
• Try something else.
Why This Matters in Business (and Life)
I see hesitation all the time — even with high-performing professionals.
Agents hesitate to start the conversation, change strategy, try a new approach, back themselves, or step into something bigger.
But success rarely comes from waiting for certainty.
It comes from movement.
Testing ideas.
Learning as you go.
Adjusting course.
Every step gives feedback.
Every step creates clarity.
A Better Question
Instead of asking:
“What if it doesn’t work?”
Ask:
“What if this moves me closer to the life and business I really want?”
Because when you act on what matters to you — the things that energise you and make your heart sing — you’re already winning.
The outcome may be success.
Or simply: “Not there yet.”
Either way, you’re moving.
And movement always beats hesitation.
