Some recent comments on my social media posts reminded me of something important…
We all walk through life with a completely different “map of the world.”
Our upbringing. Our age. Our experiences. Our culture. Our successes, disappointments, influences, and insecurities all shape the lens through which we see things.
So it’s no surprise that two people can look at the exact same situation and walk away with completely different opinions.
The problem is, when we judge others for not seeing the world the way we do — or try to convince them that our perspective is the “right” one — we often miss the opportunity to truly see the person in front of us.
And that’s where connection gets lost.
When people feel the need to defend, convince, or win, it almost never has anything to do with the subject at hand.
It has to do with their beliefs.
About themselves. About how the world works. About what’s true.
When a belief feels threatened, we don’t discuss it.
We protect it.
We dig in.
We push back.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth: this is true for everyone.
The beliefs driving our conversations — in our families, workplaces, friendships, and communities — are often beliefs we’ve never consciously examined. We’ve simply lived from them. And so has everyone else.
That’s what makes some conversations feel impossible.
But it’s also what makes self-awareness, coaching, and genuine curiosity so powerful.
When we slow down enough to understand what’s actually being believed — both in ourselves and in others — something shifts.
We stop needing to win; be right; look good;
We start being able to connect.
And maybe the real growth isn’t in changing someone’s mind…
but in expanding our ability to understand the lens they’re looking through.
Because missed connections often become missed opportunities.
And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is not to convince — but to truly listen.
If you’re ready to better understand yourself, improve your communication, strengthen relationships, and lead with more confidence and connection, my 5-week coaching program is designed to help you do exactly that.
