April 2023 Month 3 – Distance travelled 3,700km – Temp 19/31degrees

Leaving Queensland’s highest town Ravenshoe (930 meters) behind we’re starting our trip into the outback via Savannah Way.

We couldn’t resist a quick relaxing soak at the Innot Hot Springs before driving on to Mt Garnet.

Here we caught up again with Claire Wyatt. I prepared a traditional English ‘Bangers & Mash’ to keep her strength up for the start into the next leg of her 16,000 km cycling trip around Australia, which finishes in Perth.

The Undara Volcanic National Park was next on our to do list. Here the Undara shield volcano formed lava tubes about 190,000 years ago and viewing these amazing structures didn’t disappoint! We also hiked to Atkinson‘s lookout traversing the dense bush.

We’re now getting into the real outback. It feels like we’ve fallen of the map, where dusty gravel roads, wildlife and stray cows’ rule.

A quick overnight stop at a lovely grassy site at Mount Surprise and we’re off to dramatic Cobbold Gorge. Trevor broke the golden rule of no gravel roads and we rattled into the resort on over 45 kilometres of dirt road.

Cobbold Gorge is one of our trip highlights! A green oasis boasting an infinity pool with a water bar, overlooking a picturesque lake. The hike through the million years’ old sandstone formations was awe inspiring.

A quick overnight stop in the historic gold rush town of Croydon, before driving on to the ‘outback by the sea’ Karumba on the Golf of Carpentaria.
