March 2023 Month 2 – 2350km travelled – Temp 32C/25C

Crossing the Daintree River via car ferry travelling north to one of the best camp grounds in seven weeks. Having visited 20 different places so far, the ‘Daintree Rainforest Village’ stood out.

Positioned in the Rainforest surrounded by lush, grassed hillside, tropical plants and distant views to mountains covered in clouds.

We spotted a variety of tropical butterflies including our favourites ‘cairns bird wing’ and ‘Ulysses’ plus a monitor.

After a few magical days we took the windy, narrow road through the rainforest up to Cape Tribulation. We stopped at Thornton Beach Cafe a lovely setting right on the beach for morning tea and even bought a freshly baked loaf of bread there.

The energy at Cape Tribulation was mesmerising it’s like going back to the dinosaur times. The locals are relaxed and apparently till last year didn’t need to have their cars registered north of the Daintree River. Wow.

We walked lots of rainforest trails, got trenched by a tropical downpour and just loved being in this ancient spiritual wilderness.

Reluctantly we travelled south to Newell Beach and relaxed in this sleepy hamlet.

Followed by a touch more civilisation in Mossman, which boasts a couple of top-notch cafes and great Saturday markets with tropical fruits like pink dragon fruit (pitaya).

Eyeing off another stay in Palm cove, a favourite spot before heading up the range to Kuranda.
