April 2023 Month 3 – Temp 24/17 – 2900km travelled
Launching the amazing Waterfall circuit with a hike to Barron Falls in Kuranda, the spiritual home of the Atherton Tablelands. Here we loved camping right in tropical rainforest surrounded by colorful and interesting wildlife. Kingfisher-and Sunbirds, Ulysses butterflies and pademelons (tiny Kangaroos).
Waving goodbye to the eclectic mix of arty Kuranda residents we’re pointing our camper towards the heart of the Atherton tablelands.
First stop Mareeba, where we stayed in another awesome tropical and very secluded campground. Wallabies (macropod family like Kangaroos) dropped in for a visit on a few occasions. After a hot hike up to Emerald Creek Falls, we joined a lovely Easter Party with the locals back at the base.
Then off to spend eight nights in Atherton the largest hub in the Tablelands. The focus was squarely on finishing my book ‘Confessions of a woman in real estate’. I can proudly say ‘it’s a wrap’!
We had a great time catching up one evening at an excellent Thai restaurant with Claire Wyatt (world touring cyclist adventurer) . Claire, like us is buying time at Atherton due to extreme flooding inland, before heading into the outback.
Now walking in settlers and miners footsteps in the historic towns of Herberton, Millaa Millaa and Ravenshoe ( pronounced ray..when’s ..ho), exploring the unique Waterfall Circuit of the Atherton Tablelands.
Too many to visit but we managed hiking to Emerald Creek Falls, Dinner falls, Millaa Millaa, Zillie Falls, Ellinjaa Falls, Mungalli Falls and majestic (don’t mess with this one..)Tully gorge in Ravenshoe.
Things will get even more exciting with our trip into the outback to Undara to experience the lava tubes. Watch this space!
