Lost In Gippsland…What Day Is It?

Like floating in a vivid fabulous dream Southeast Gippsland in Victoria has us captivated and in high spirits.

Reality can wait as we breeze into the tiny beach hamlet of Walkerville. Here time really does stand still. There was that ‘something in the air’, a different energy.

It wasn’t just the soothing sounds of ocean waves meters away from camp, the long beach walks or being woken up by chirping Fairywren and Crimson Rosellas.

Reluctantly we said goodbye to Walkerville and travelled on to Tidal River in the Wilsons Promontory National Park. Lovingly known as ‘The Prom’, it really should be called ‘Jurassic Park’.

A magnificent tapestry of granite-studded hills contrasted by fiery orange lid boulders framed by sparkling clear turquoise waters and amazing white sandy beaches.

One of which ‘Squeaky Beach’ has just been named Number 1 in Tourism Australia’s annual list of Australia’s Top 10.

Wanting to experience as much as possible of the awesome scenery we hiked along the rugged coastal tracks and exploring rainforests with their hidden fern gullies. Keeping an eye out for Dinosaurs as Wombats scurried out of dense bush foliage to join us on the path.

We spotted an array of other wildlife too. Wilsons Prom is home to kangaroos, emus, echidnas, and variety of birds like the colourful rosellas.

Interestingly 10,000 years ago we could have travelled on to Tassie (Tasmania) from here, as there was a mountain chain which stretched from the Prom all the way down. Of course, sea levels rose, and we’ll have to save that trip for another adventure.

Then our journey continued through quaint towns like Foster and Toora with a quick stop at Agnes Falls.

Next on to quiet Seaspray, followed by a lovely stay at Paynesville with a visit to Raymond Island where we spotted more Koalas.

Bairnsdale is located in the rural area of East Gippsland. Blending right in I danced to music of an impromptu bush band in the campground.

Moving on we couldn’t ignore the mega classy town of Metung. Picture perfect overlooking Bancroft Bay, it’s one of the most attractive towns in the Lakes District, if not Australia.

A brief stop at Lakes Entrance, which was a bit too touristy for us.

Though we very much enjoyed our stays in nearby Marlo and Mallacoota. The last two places in Victoria before heading to Thathra our first stop in New South Wales.

We lost all sense of time in Gippsland, but we still remembered to celebrate our big milestone! What an epic yearlong journey with Mr T…around Oz in our cozy camper…I love you … I love you not… I love you 😊

Als würden wir in einem lebendigen, fabelhaften Traum schweben. Südost-Gippsland in Victoria fasziniert uns. Die Realität kann warten, besonders in dem kleinen Strandort Walkerville. Hier steht die Zeit wirklich still. Hier war etwas in der Luft“, eine andere Energie. Es waren nicht nur die beruhigenden Geräusche der Meereswellen, nur wenige Meter vom Camp oder die langen Strandspaziergänge oder vom zwitschern der Fairywren und Crimson Rosellas aufgeweckt zu werden.

Wir verabschieden uns von Walkerville und reisen weiter zum Tidal River im Wilsons Promontory National Park. Liebevoll als „The Prom“ bekannt, sollte es eigentlich „Jurassic Park“ heißen. Granitbedeckte Hügel im Kontrast zu feurig orangefarbenen Felsbrocken, umrahmt von glitzerndem, klarem, türkisfarbenem Wasser und atemberaubenden weißen Sandstränden. Einer davon, „Squeaky Beach“, wurde gerade zur Nummer 1 in der jährlichen Liste der Top 10 Australiens von Tourism Australia gekürt. Wir wanderten auf zerklüfteten Küstenpfade und erkundeten die Regenwälder mit ihren versteckten Farnschluchten. Wir hielten Ausschau nach Dinosauriern, während Wombats aus dem dichten Buschwerk hervorhuschten, um sich uns auf dem Weg anzuschließen.

Wilsons Prom ist die Heimat von Kängurus, Emus, Ameisenigeln und einer Vielzahl von Vögeln wie den farbenfrohen Rosellas. Interessanterweise hätten wir vor 10.000 Jahren von hier aus weiter nach Tassie (Tasmanien) reisen können, da es dort eine Bergkette gab, die sich vom Prom bis nach unten erstreckte. Natürlich ist der Meeresspiegel gestiegen und wir müssen uns diese Reise für ein weiteres Abenteuer aufsparen.

Dann ging unsere Reise weiter durch malerische Städte wie Foster und Toora mit einem kurzen Stopp bei Agnes Falls. Weiter ging es zum ruhigen Seaspray, gefolgt von einem schönen Aufenthalt in Paynesville mit einem Besuch auf Raymond Island, wo wir weitere Koalas entdeckten. Bairnsdale liegt in der ländlichen Gegend von East Gippsland. Hier tanzte ich zur Musik einer improvisierten Buschband auf dem Campingplatz. Als wir weitergingen, konnten wir die Mega-Luxusstadt Metung nicht ignorieren. Mit ihrem malerischen Blick auf die Bancroft Bay ist sie eine der attraktivsten Städte im Lakes District, wenn nicht sogar in ganz Australien. Ein kurzer Stop am Lakes Entrance, der uns etwas zu touristisch war. Allerdings haben wir unsere Aufenthalte im nahegelegenen Marlo und Mallacoota sehr genossen. Die letzten beiden Orte in Victoria, bevor es nach Thathra geht, unserem ersten Stop in New South Wales.

In Gippsland haben wir jegliches Zeitgefühl verloren, aber wir haben uns trotzdem daran erinnert, unseren großen Meilenstein zu feiern! Was für eine epische, einjährige Reise mit Mr. T … durch Oz in unserem gemütlichen Wohnmobil … Ich liebe dich … Ich liebe dich nicht … Ich liebe dich 😊
