Coach Hannah here…
As 2024 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the year that has been. It’s a mix of looking back at the highs and lows—the projects I finished and those still waiting, the moments that stood out, and the milestones I reached in my professional life.
There were also opportunities I haven’t seized just yet. This brings to mind Dr. Carol Dweck’s inspiring work on growth mindset and the empowering concept of “Not Yet.”
Dr. Carol Dweck, a renowned psychologist and professor at Stanford University, has revolutionized how we understand learning and achievement through her work on the concept of the growth mindset. Her research emphasizes the transformative power of believing in the capacity for development, resilience, and change, particularly in educational, professional, and personal contexts.
Growth Mindset versus Fixed Mindset
At the heart of Dweck’s work is the distinction between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Individuals with a fixed mindset perceive abilities, intelligence, and talents as static traits. In contrast, those with a growth mindset see these traits as malleable and improvable through effort, learning, and persistence.
This paradigm shift challenges traditional notions of talent and intelligence, suggesting that failure and struggle are not endpoints but stepping stones toward mastery.
The Power of ‘Not Yet’
One of the most empowering concepts Dweck introduces is the idea of “not yet.” Instead of labelling a task or skill as a binary success or failure, “not yet” suggests that improvement is simply a matter of time and effort. This approach fosters resilience, reduces fear of failure, and instils a sense of optimism about future possibilities.
This subtle shift in language encourages perseverance and reframes challenges as opportunities for growth.
In the workplace, leaders with a growth mindset cultivate cultures of innovation, where employees feel safe to take risks and learn from setbacks. In personal development, embracing “not yet” helps individuals overcome self-doubt and pursue long-term goals with greater determination.
Dr. Carol Dweck’s research on the growth mindset and the “not yet” philosophy encourages us to reimagine our potential. By adopting the belief that skills and intelligence can grow through effort, we open the door to greater performance, creativity, and personal achievement.
In a world that often values quick wins and instant gratification, Dr. Dweck’s emphasis on patience, persistence, and the journey of self-improvement feels especially relevant: success isn’t a fixed endpoint but a lifelong process of growth.
As we step into 2025, will you embrace a growth mindset and tackle your challenges with the empowering words, “not yet”?
