Day 11 – Distance travelled 1000km – Temp 32/22
A quick update on our fab time on our 3-night stay in Yeppoon, located just a little north of the Tropic of Capricorn. A line that represents the southernmost position of the sun on its annual journey where the sun can be directly overhead.
On arrival at our absolute beach front oasis we were greeted by red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii) welcoming us to a paradise located on the Southern Great Barrier Reef easing us gently into the hot humid climate.
Our fellow travellers are mostly European tourists. Belgians, Dutch, and Germans who haven’t got the message either that you’re not meant to go troppo (not travel north) in the Australian summer.
But who can resist the stunning landscapes and natural sites, everyone desperately quizzing us on how to stay in Oz forever. ‘We felt privileged’!
Our day trip to Great Keppel Island was another highlight. Trekking on a steep monitor lizard trail to Shelving beach and spending hours in the crystal-clear turquoise sea, snorkelling with the locals, sea turtles, rays and colourful fish.
The reef was a good 300-meter swim off the beach and there was a little concern on my part (Hannah), when a large about 50cm fish was chased out of the water by something even bigger.
Watching a sea turtle feed on sea grass with colourful fish dancing around it was awe-inspiring.
We left magical Yeppoon and the micro bats at Capricorn caves behind and continued on our journey 230km north to ‘Barracrab’ a popular Campground in Clairview, where I will try a spot of fishing. Don’t worry I do have salmon in the freezer for backup!
