Month 2 – 2100km traveled – Temp 32/24
Leaving Bowen behind we had an awesome time on Magnetic Island off Townsville. We almost had all the bays to ourselves and the walk through the rainforest and the snorkeling was amazing. Trevor loved Alma Bay and I had a great time swimming with a huge cod and lots of colorful reef fish beneath a boat at Florence Bay. We stayed 4 nights in Townsville, and I even sneaked a hair appointment.
Attached is a map which shows our trip along the Cassowary Coast. Next, we couldn’t resist to drop into Mission Beach for a couple of nights. We know this laid-back little town well and love the great energy from the surrounding World Heritage rainforest and its tropical laid-back vibe.
The rainforest comes right down to the beach, and we enjoyed beautiful walks and blending in with the locals.
Then we checked out Paronella Park. A Spanish immigrant Jose build a castle in the rainforest next to the Meena Creek falls for his wife Margarita. It’s a very romantic setting and we spotted hundreds of Ulysses butterflies.
Then we went to Etty bay which is well known for Cassowaries. We were not disappointed and saw a male with his chick wondering through the camp site many time feeding on red Palm tree fruits.
Then we traveled on to Babinda boulders for refreshing swims in crystal clear waters. This was our first free camp site (legally) 😊. We spotted lots of insects from Dragonflies, to green Mantis and lots more Ulysses butterflies.
The plan is to stay longer on the East coast as there is major flooding west of Queensland.
