I had a great experience today at the Capricorn Caves north of Rockhampton, Queensland. Exploring limestone caves and watching in awe Micro bats with bodies not bigger than a thumbnail swirl around us. These little creatures are not only cute but it was a real eye opener just how important they are to our environment.
Our passionate guide Amber Countryman explained… without pollinating and seed dispersing bats many of our ecosystems would gradually die.
In fact, 500 species rely on bats to pollinate their flowers. Amber exclaimed bats are more important than bees, without them plants can’t provide food and cover for wildlife species near the base of the food chain, plants die and the animals with it, causing the ecosystems to collapse.
Amber voiced her concern with urgency ‘No bats, no Australian Bush’!
